The Fundació Stämpfli–Art Contemporani looks at 75 years of the creative path of Peter Stämpfli with a triple display exploring past, present and future
The Fundació Stämpfli – Art Contemporani is inaugurating “Figuració Narrativa – Empremta 2025 – 1950-2025” on Saturday, 10 May, at 7 pm, offering three exhibitions based around three main themes and representing a visual and conceptual synthesis of the areas of work that have shaped the artistic path of Peter Stämpfli and the foundation that bears his name.
The display will be open to the general public from Sunday, 11 May, and is conceived as a celebration of Peter Stämpfli’s 75 years of creation. The exhibition occupies three rooms in the museum, managed by the Sitges Heritage Consortium, with unique and complementary pieces exploring the different stages of the Swiss artist’s work and his dialogue with other outstanding names in European contemporary art.
ROOM 1 – Narrative Figuration
15 Years of the Prefiguration of the Foundation Archive
The first room captures the founding spirit of the Fundació Stämpfli, centring on one of its main areas of work: Narrative Figuration, a movement which started in France in the 60s as a critical response to consumer society and the great political and media narratives of the time, in the social context that led to the events of May 1968.
This room marks 15 years since the first public presentation of the foundation’s archive, held at the Centre Cultural Miramar in April 2010. That exhibition was a turning point in the cultural project that would become consolidated with the opening of the museum in 2011.
This display represents 12 fundamental artists in narrative figuration, all of them present in the foundation’s collection: Antonio Seguí, Bernard Rancillac, Eduardo Arroyo, Erró, Gérard Fromanger, Gianni Bertini, Henri Cueco, Jacques Monory, Jan Voss, Marco Del Re, Peter Klasen and Peter Stämpfli.
ROOM 2 – Imprint 2025
A large-format installation
The present of art and of the foundation is concentrated in the second room with Empremta 2025, a single piece by Peter Stämpfli, which fills the whole floor of the room and invites visitors to become immersed in its visual language.
With this large-format installation, the artist again explores the imprint as a visual and philosophical concept, an area which has shaped much of his work, particularly from the 1970s onwards. The result is a physical and visual immersive experience, offering a new vision of the exhibition space and the relationship between work and spectator.
ROOM 3 – 1950–2025. 75 years of creation
The early works of a developing artist
The third room rounds off the route with an unusual vision of the past: a selection of unseen youth works by Peter Stämpfli, produced between 1950 and 1953, when the artist was just starting out.
These are gouache works inspired by impressionist maestros, kept privately to date and now exhibited to the general public for the first time. The set of pieces reveals the origin of a vocation, the point when painting ceases to be just learning and becomes a way of life.
With this triple exhibition, the Fundació Stämpfli – Art Contemporani offers a cross-cutting reading of its own history and reaffirms its commitment to the dissemination of European contemporary art.
